Sussex Power Supply Upgrade

Vertex Systems Engineering (Vertex) has been appointed by McNicholas Construction to support its client Network Rail Infrastructure Projects with Safety Assurance works for the Sussex Power Supply Upgrade until its planned completion in 2019.

The primary objective of the project is to ensure sufficient traction power across the Sussex Route, outside of those areas covered by the Thameslink programme, that will meet the demands of the December 2018 timetable, as modelled by the Development Timetable (DTT) 2011 timetable.

The scope of works include;

  • New Substations;
  • TP Hut conversions;
  • Feeder route works;
  • DNO site upgrades;
  • DC protection works;
  • Upgrade of existing substations;
  • Upgrade of existing feeders;
  • SCADA and Telecoms enhancements and
  • Electrical Trackside Equipment (ETE) Enhancements.

McNicholas have appointed Vertex for the provision of CSM support for GRIP 5-8 on each design package for input into the pre-commissioning Safety Assessment Report’s (SAR) in accordance with the project’s Independent Assessment Plan (IAP) through to the final SAR during GRIP 8.

Activities include;

  • A base line review of the GRIP 4 SAR;
  • Facilitation of HAZID workshops;
  • Management of project Hazard Log;
  • Regular liaison with the Independent Assessment Body (AsBo);
  • Collation and review of project design and documentation for submission and presentation to the AsBo and
  • Support to the project to enable Entry Into Service.

Work commenced during October 2016 with planned completion February 2019.
